Thought for the week

The Priestly Blessings

This Shabbat we read the longest single Torah portion in the entire Torah, Naso. At the very center of the portion, the Torah commands the priests to bless the people. We recite the priestly blessing so frequently, every holiday, every Friday night, every day in Israel, that this blessing forms the core of blessings we hope for in our lives. Using the Midrash as a guide, let us examine more closely what these three verses teach us.

"May G-d bless you and safeguard you." (Numbers 6:24)
The unique message from this verse is that from G-d, hand in hand with blessing comes safety. We are often given the blessings of great gifts, great talents and great opportunities. But do we maximize those gifts? When we reflect on squandered blessing, we realize that our gifts become curses. To have the blessings of our potential find expression in a real way in our lives is our safeguard. (Midrash Rabba 11:5)

"May G-d shine His countenance upon you and be gracious to you." (ibid 6:25) In this verse we are blessed with happiness; to feel the lightness in our own eyes. When we carry a burden on our hearts, darkness feels pervasive. Our blessing is the G-d's light with be a light, a joy for our hearts. Again, the first half of the blessing can only be fully realized with the second half: the blessings of joy come to life by grace. We hope for G-d's blessing that we be gracious and love one another. That is our happiness in action. (ibid 11:6)

"May G-d turn his countenance toward you and grant you peace." (ibid 6:26)
Often in Biblical usage, when G-d turns His face toward it implies in anger or punishment. But in this context, we are blessed to have the face of G-d's care and interest focused on us. Along similar lines, we are blessed to have G-d's attention while we stand in prayer. Our turn to G-d brings G-d's turn toward us. And with this example of closeness comes the blessing of peace. Now that we have the tools to live in deep intimacy with G-d, we can find peace between ourselves and each other. (ibid 11:7)

With the holiday of Shavuot coming this week we find another causal blessing: with forty nine days of anticipatory counting, we can now receive our great gift of Torah.
