Thought for the week
The Holy of Holies
It is interesting that as we are about to celebrate Pesach, we read from the Torah this Shabbat, Achrei Mot, which deals with the service of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. There is a deeper connection of these two events than chance alone.
When the high priest ascends for the intricate Yom Kippur worship, we see a heavy emphasis on his two sets of adornment. The first set is the more ornate, golden vestments, worn when doing the service around the Temple. But for his rare entrance into the Holy of Holies, the priest must don the simple linen garments. (Leviticus 16:4)
The text offers an interesting connection of Holy of Holies and the linen garments. G-d tells Moses and all priests: "Do not enter at any time lest you die…for as a cloud I appear over the cover." (ibid, v. 2) Since the presence of G-d is manifest in the Holy of Holies, presumably at all times, the priest would breech the boundary between himself and G-d, where he to enter on a whim. However, on Yom Kippur, while wearing the linen, the priest offers no affront to the Divine. Rabbi Levi suggests that the priest must wear the linen, as opposed to golden garments, in order to feel humility at the awesome moment when facing G-d. (Leviticus Rabba 21:10)
This practice of wearing the simple white garment finds expression in a number of areas in traditional Jewish life. Naturally, we mimic the priest's white garments during the high holidays as an act of spiritual introspection; the bride and groom wear white, perhaps as a sign of the humility they will need to help them make room for each other as a new family; a corpse is adorned with the simple white shroud as a sign of the ultimate humility when we confront mortality; and there is a tradition of wearing this white garment on Passover too.
Pesach is the night of telling our story of exodus, teaching our children.
Great care must be taken when we teach. Education needs to be filled with a deep sense of humility. In the classroom or on Pesach night, we enter a sort of Holy of Holies; the subject is holy, the dialogue is holy and, most importantly, the students are holy.
