Thought for the week

G-d's Relationships, Our Relationships

When Israel betrays its relationship to G-d, in this week's Torah portion, by worshipping the Golden Calf, the rupture sends violent tremors throughout the fragile, nascent nation. A reparative healing must ensue. Through Moses' intervention and leadership, G-d, the scorned lover, turns to fully reaccept His people.

The crisis leads to vulnerability and a sharing of emotion between G-d and man unseen in the Torah. The barriers between the divine and human realms become hazy. At the height of the rapprochement, Moses turns to G-d with an incredible request: "Let me see Your glory." (Exodus 33:18)

The classic medieval commentators, Rashi and Ibn Ezra, interpret this as a literal request: Moses wants to see, to know and to understand G-d's ‘essence.' (See Ibn Ezra on Exodus 31:18) This appeared as an opportunity for Moses to deepen his relationship with G-d, so he asked for the incredible. (See Rashi, ibid) As we try to deepen the relationships with those closest to us, sometimes we need to find the courage to help the relationship transcend its current state.

Rashbam offers a different interpretation entirely. Moses would not dare ask to see G-d's presence, but he was looking for an assurance of G-d's commitment to the Jewish people. (See Rashbam, ibid) Following the theme of human relationship, this would then be another model of interrelationship. While the first explanation offers a risk taking courage as the natural outgrowth of the evolving relationship, this model is much more cautious. We want to run and fly with those we love, but we keep looking over our shoulder to be sure that our beloved will run and fly with us.

Anytime is good time to take stock and consider the quality of our relationships. Let this Shabbat be a time that we invest the care and the time toward the people that mean the most to us.

Shabbat Shalom Umevorach,
Rav Menashe
