Thought for the week

Honor and Pride

In this Shabbat's Torah portion, Tezaveh, the first half of the reading deals with the priestly vestments. When serving G-d as a communal messenger, the outward persona and image that the priest carries says much about the role he plays and the attitude that he brings as he approaches the holy sanctuary. But the Torah uses an interesting, though vague, language to describe the priest's outward appearance: "Lichavod U'litifaret," which we might translate as ‘honor and pride.' What does the Torah mean to teach about the priest and his role in the community when using these words to describe the garments?

These two words, ‘kavod' and ‘tifaret', carry distinctly separate meanings and implications. Similar to the fifth commandment, ‘Kabed et Avicha v'et Imecha,' honoring our parents, which connotes a reverential attitude: the title of parent demands a child's respect, irrespective of the quality of parenting, so too the priest holds a position of reverence in the community simply by his title and position in the community; the clothes make the priest. And the mere presence of the priest would impress upon the community an attitude of reverence and import for his honored role.

Quite opposite, though, from the sense of Kavod, is the second descriptive word, ‘tiferet.' The priest cannot rely solely on the status of his status, nor can he view himself with too much self importance. Tiferet, Pride must be earned through a realistic self understanding and through the quality of his conduct. Rebbi writes in the Mishna Avot: "Which path should a person choose to follow? That which brings pride, tiferet, to the one who acts and that which brings pride, tiferet, to those around him." (Avot 2:1) With this value, the clothes serve as reminder of the integrity and uprightness that his post demands; the clothes make the man.

This then becomes an important message and challenge for us too. We live with titles: Parent, spouse, teacher, manager, foreman, CEO and official.
Our titles give us power, but do our titles give us pause?

Shabbat Shalom Umevorach,
Rav Menashe
