Making the Same Mistakes

We open this Torah portion, Vayichi, to find Jacob sick and nearing his death. Following the example set by his father, Isaac, Jacob blesses his children, preparing them for a future without him. The new architects of the Jewish community must feel equipped for their challenge.

The first blessings Jacob imparts are not for his children, but for his grandchildren, Menashe and Efraim. As we read the story of the blessings for Menashe and Efraim, we recall a similar scene: Isaac's blessings for his sons Jacob and Esau. Here too, Jacob is aged; his vision failing, groping for his grandchildren, perhaps for embrace, perhaps to be sure who stands before him.

And the similarities continue. With Menashe, the eldest, and Efraim sitting before him, Jacob places his right hand, the dominant hand for blessing, on Efraim's head and the left hand on Menashe's head. Similar to the conflict where Jacob, the youngest, wins his father's blessing, over Esau, his older brother, Jacob, here too, favors the youngest. This pattern of the youngest as the chosen child, while the older siblings are less favored, has been the consistent conflict in each generation of the first Jewish family. Now with the end of an era, Jacob seems to perpetuate this dysfunction by choosing Efraim over Menashe.

In fact, Joseph tries changing the pattern of favoritism: "Not so, father…for the other is first-born, place your right hand on his head." (Genesis 48:18) Joseph lived through a violent sibling rivalry; Joseph bore the brunt of his father's choice. Joseph knows the dangers that lie ahead for the family that feels threatened by its members. Joseph and his brothers righted the wrongs from their past, but Joseph sees his father laying the foundation for the reoccurrence of those wrongs.

Jacob responds: "I know my son, I know…And he blessed them saying ‘through you shall Israel invoke blessing"' (ibid v. 19-20) Jacob reassures Joseph; he understands the consequences of their past. But he stresses to Joseph that the family blessing is this very challenge. The difficulties of the past brought blessing too. Jacob, the sage grandfather, advises Joseph to remain aligned with how the family has always been.

Shabbat Shalom Umevorach,
Rav Menashe
