Thought for the week

Choosing Freedom

Appointed viceroy of the most powerful empire in the Middle East, Joseph oversees the strongest economy and most robust resources, while the rest of the region languishes through a tough drought and famine. The oppressive conditions bring Joseph's brothers to Egypt in search of sustenance. Upon meeting, Joseph immediately "remembers his dreams," many years earlier, where the brothers bow to, so they think, Egyptian royalty. (Genesis 42:6-9)

The difficulty with this story is after meeting his brothers, why does Joseph continue to conceal his true identity? He could have revealed himself to them at any time?

Nachmanides explains that Joseph's dreams came true, mostly. However, the dreams were still partially unfulfilled. Joseph, therefore, would not reveal his identity until he could more certainly see the realization of his dreams. Even at the expense of his father's great suffering, Joseph resisted revealing his true identity for the sake of a greater purpose. (v.9)

Yet, if we look at the comments of Rashi, we are still troubled. According to Rashi, by seeing his brothers bow to him, Joseph understood that his dreams were, in fact, fulfilled. (v. 9) Since the divine message came to fruition, Joseph should have ended the charade and relieved Jacob's inconsolability at that very moment?

However, the dreams from last week's Torah reading offer a momentary snapshot. Joseph foresees his brothers bowing to him. And that is exactly what happens. But the dreams end there. Joseph's dreams serve as glimpses, not guide books, of the future. In this and last week's Torah readings, Joseph acts as a dream interpreter for others, now Joseph must interpret his own dreams. These stories demonstrate the realities of choice. Joseph has a sense, not certainty, as to how he must proceed.

Channukah celebrates the liberation of the Jews from Greek oppression. For generations to follow, Judeans lived as an autonomous state. And that freedom survives today. For sixty years, the modern state of Israel has been breathing that same spirit, living with the gifts and challenges of freedom. This Channukah is a time to rededicate ourselves to our blessings of choice.

Shabbat Shalom Umevorach v'Chag Urim Sameach,
Rav Menashe
