Thought for the week

A Tradition of Courage

So far, the book of Genesis described two beginnings. The first, with the words: "In the Beginning," showed us the creation of universal, global and human existence. (1:1) The second beginning, "These are the generations of Noach," showed us beginning anew; life restored after the flood. (6:9)
This Shabbat we encounter the third beginning, "Go for yourself from your land, your birthplace, your father's house to a land I will show you." (12:1) Now, we witness the start of Judaism, carried by its first adherents, Abraham and Sarah.

Abraham's first act of devotion is his willingness to abandon his birthplace and to travel to an unknown land. It seems a fitting start to Abraham's life and the destiny of Jewish history. Abraham begins his adventure into ethical monotheism by taking a great, courageous risk. He willingly follows a path with an uncertain end.

In the life of commitment to Jewish tradition, we uphold the system of Halacha, Jewish law. Its very name, Halacha, means the path. When we choose to lead a life of devotion, as Avraham had, we travel a path with an uncertain end. Often the path will become rocky, winding and muddy. How are we to traverse the unexpected and the unknown? Our father Abraham teaches us that we keep moving on. True. It is not always clear the best way to proceed, but we go "to a land I will show you." Or as Sforno comments, we go to a place where G-d will show Himself to us. (See verse 12:1)

The question that a community of tradition must ask itself, constantly:
Are we sincerely adhering to the tradition or are we adjusting the dials of tradition to rid the static? The Talmud answers simply: look at the end result.
If Abraham were to have remained in Ur Kasdiim, his birthplace, he and Sarah would never have had children. But by deciding to leave, Abraham and Sarah earn G-d's promise that they will be "made into a great nation." (ibid 12:2, see TB Rosh Hashanah 16b) If we challenge ourselves, if we commit ourselves to growth, then we have G-d's blessing and promise that we will birth positive ends.

Shabbat Shalom Umevorach,
Rav Menashe
