Thought for the week - Parashat Noach

The Art of Praise

This Shabbat our Torah reading highlights the infamous and troubling story of the great flood. The deluge destroys all of creation, except for Noach, his family and the wildlife aboard his ark. With the entire world on the brink of destruction, we must wonder: by what merit does Noach and family survive the catastrophe?

The first verse in the Torah portion answers that question as it describes Noach's character: "In his generation, Noach was a fully righteous man." (Genesis 6:9)
A person of exceptional moral stature, Noach overcomes the curse of his generation because of uncommon righteousness. Oddly, in the next chapter, when speaking to Noach, G-d alters the explanation as to why Noach is saved from the flood: "For I have seen you as righteous…in this generation." (ibid 7:1)

In the first verse, Noach's character is described as ‘fully righteous,' while that appellation changes in the second verse as G-d refers to Noach as merely ‘righteous.' Why the discrepancy?

The Talmud notes the difference and reads this as a model of right conduct, stating that we try to offer minimum praise face to face, but we must elaborate when apart from one another. (TB Eruvin 18b) Thus, when speaking about Noach, he is the ‘fully righteous man,' but when speaking directly to Noach, he is simply ‘righteous.'

But why must we spare our praise; everyone needs to feel encouraged and supported? When we succeed in a professional, relational or ethical sphere, we appreciate and, sometimes, even long for the approbation. Why would the Talmud advocate restraint when abundant giving would seem best?

Commenting on the Talmud's dictum, Rashi suggests a most insightful answer. When we praise a peer, colleague, employee or loved one, we hope to foster a deeper, more meaningful relationship; complimenting can lead to caring. But a strong relationship needs the commitment of both parties to succeed. If our praise, even if sincere, is overmuch, the recipient may doubt its authenticity; excess compliment may be perceived as curse.

This Shabbat we try to become aware of the people we relate to every day, all the time and try to find the words to share with them that will draw us ever closer.

Shabbat Shalom Umevorach,
Rav Menashe
