Thought for the week

Making Yom Kippur Meaningful

For all special times, we hope to identify and capture the uniqueness of that moment. As we approach the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur, we try finding meaning and inspiration on this day. How can we hold onto the greatness of this day so that Yom Kippur will leave a deep impression on our hearts for the coming year?

The stories of our Jewish heritage, our past, often serve as great inspiration for us, in our present. The Torah reading for Yom Kippur recounts the service in the temple on Yom Kippur. The High Priest, Aaron, would go through a rigorous process of preparation, of sacrifices, of clothing himself in his gold and, then, linen garments and his ritual immersions. The pinnacle of the service would be Aaron's entrance into the most sacred space of the temple, the Holy of Holies. (See Leviticus 16)

The image of Aaron clothed in his simple linen outfit, entering the place where G-d's presence hovers, as a cloud of incense fills the small cube is an image that we can adopt at our own Yom Kippur experience.

We too have undergone great preparation. During the summer months we mourned the destruction of Jerusalem and our severance from G-d. The month of Elul served as a time of rekindling our relationships; Rosh Hashanah announced G-d as our King and Creator, but we, then, arrive at Yom Kippur, an even deeper opening and a more intimate chamber for our relationships to grow, the Holy of Holies.

This Yom Kippur we imagine ourselves like Aaron, like the high priest, embarking on a journey to our most intimate, most sublime relationship. Yom Kippur breaks down the barriers between us and other. G-d is not left alone in the Holy of Holies, behind curtains. Yom Kippur pushes the curtains away and brings us face to face with G-d and ourselves.

In Rabbinic tradition, Yom Kippur is described as the happiest day on the Jewish calendar. (TB Taanit 30a) There is no happiness as powerful as the removal of doubt, when curtains of potentiality open wide before our eyes.

Shabbat Shalom Umevorach and Gmar Chatima Tova,
Rav Menashe
