KAY BULLETIN: Sept. 12-15 Rosh Hashanah & Shabbat Shuva

Shana tova
Rosh Hashana is upon us. May the spirit of teshuva (return) fill us all, allowing us to discover and be at peace with who we really are, to renew and rebuild relationships with all those around us, and to be filled with the spirituality of Hashem and Torah as the centering and guiding force in our lives.

May this new year bring peace in our community, to the Jewish people throughout the world, to our beloved State of Israel, and to all of humanity. May evil soon depart from the world, and may tranquility and happiness fill the earth forever.

We wish everyone a sweet, peaceful, prosperous and happy new year, filled with every blessing.

L'shana tova tikateivu - may you be written for a good year!

Thought for the week

Rising from Our Slumber

We celebrate Rosh Hashanah tomorrow for two days and with the coming New Year, we welcome 5768 as a time to usher in peace and possibility. Rosh Hashanah is described as ‘Yom Teruah.' A vague term, but often translated as the day of shaking. This ‘shaking' relates to the shofar of Rosh Hashanah. When we hear the blast, we stir and shake. The Rabbis liken the concept of the shofar blasts to an alarm clock for our soul. "Rise you sleepy ones from your sleep."

Without the desire or encouragement to move from our comfort zones, how can we even think of peace, of better health, of better financial success in the coming year? Rabbi Eliezer ben Durdai makes this realization at the apex of his inner transformative experience, announcing to himself: "The matter is up to me." (TB Avodah Zara 17a)

It is all too easy to talk of wishes and blessings, but how do we make them actual, tangible? If we've been lacking those blessings or our wishes have gone unfulfilled, we must reevaluate our approach and find another way into the palace. Rosh Hashanah reminds us to wake up and shift our perspective. This shift, from sleep to waking, is the most elementary precondition to growth: the desire to grow, to make change.

This year, let us all find the strength to do something that maybe completely out of character and out of our norm; something that would surprise even ourselves. "You must be the change you want to see in the world." (Ghandi) And then we will enjoy a year full of goodness and sweetness.
