Thought for the week

What's Mine is Mine

This is the season of introspection and repair. Every year we battle any and all internal or external negativity or bad habits in order to live more fully for the coming year. But, often, we become so consumed by our own internal work that we lose sight of the community around us.

Thankfully, in current Jewish life, we often cite the phrase: "Every Jew is a guarantor for his fellow." We share a collective responsibility for the type and quality of our brothers' and sisters' behavior. When they err, we err; when they achieve, we achieve. (TB Shavuot 39a, cited by Rashi Deut. 29:28)

But how far do we take this message? We can become infatuated with the way others behave, ignoring how we ourselves are behaving. The High Holiday season can change from the age old self-inquiry into a season of other-inquiry. Could this, in an extreme case, lead to a KGB of Jewish observance?

This week's Torah portion, the double reading of Nitzaviim-Vayelech, teaches us an important message as to the limits of communal involvement in the lives of others. "The hidden matters belong to G-d, but the revealed matters are for us and our children forever." (Deuteronomy 29:28) When the matter is clear, visible and objective, we have a moral and social imperative to intervene in the lives of our brothers and sisters. We are moral guarantors for our community. However, when the matter is hidden, secretive and subjective, then we must abstain; those are matters that rest in G-d's hands, in the divine realm.

This model sets boundaries on the conditions of our social contract: Perhaps, when an act or behavior adversely affects others, it would be inhuman to sit back. But when a thought or ideology affects the individual, involvement would be trespass.

This holiday season, we try to carry this message, a message of humility: honoring the reality that we must be vigilant of a loosening of our own fundamental moral grasp and trust that G-d will do the rest.

Shabbat Shalom Umevorach,
Rav Menashe
