Thought for the week
A Judaism of Song
A large segment of this Shabbat's Torah portion, Parshat Ki Tavo, constitutes the curses that G-d vows to bring upon Israel should they stray from the path. In the middle, the crux of this section, we get a brief glimpse of a reason for the sworn calamities: "Since you did not serve G-d with joyfulness and a good heart at the peak of your abundance." (Deut. 28:47)
What manner of joyfulness could be lacking that its absence brings upon such severe punishment? The Talmud suggests it is the lack of song in our service. (TB Eruvin 11a)
It is hard to imagine that a sober service would be so costly. Let us examine the first instance of song in the Torah to understand the Talmud's message.
When the Jews cross through the Reed Sea, saved from the Egyptians, they break into song, the song at the sea: "Then Moses and Israel sang this song…" (Exodus 15:1) At that very moment of their salvation, the entire community spontaneously explodes, in unison, into song. That shared moment of joy surges in every member of Israel so that song emerges.
And the whole of the community can sing along, together.
Now we can better make sense of the Talmud's suggestion of the importance of song. When a community sings, a power of unity fills all it participants. The barriers of literacy, knowledge and prayer book expertise fall away.
Song becomes the antidote to curse. The curses are aimed at a community of individuals; lonely souls who, through detachment and indifference, magnify the loneliness of others close to them. Such a community, if we could even call it such, is fundamentally flawed. But the community that overlooks the differences, while embracing the, more apparent, likenesses, that community celebrates all the blessings the Torah promises.
Shabbat Shalom Umevorach,
Rav Menashe
